The stars, as Psalm nineteen states, declare the glory of God. They show in that context the two homecomings of the Two Houses of Israel..
The Heavens Declare the Glory of God
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Psalm 19:1-3
heep, and am known of mine.
As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. John 10:14-16
I want to show that the witness in the heavens perfectly correlates with scripture giving us a double witness of God’s plans for the end times as regards to bringing His flock home.
If you have not yet studied the Gospel message written in the stars I encourage you to do so. E.W. Bullinger’s book Witness in the Stars is one of the best and is readily available. Basically the premise is that God left a message for all mankind written in the stars. The names of the constellations and the names of the stars tell a message regarding the glory of God and His plan of redemption for all mankind. That is why Psalm 19 says that the heavens or firmament shows His handiwork uttering speech and showing knowledge yet their voice is not heard. In other words we need to see it and understand it with our eyes.
There are twelve signs of the Zodiac. Zodiac is not a bad word; it simply means the path or way, referring to the path that the sun goes through known as the ecliptic. The looking to the stars for personal prophecy is not allowed by God. This practice is called Astrology and is forbidden by God as it evokes other spirits which are not of God. God always wants us to be safe from those spirits.
Most of us would know the names of the twelve signs. What most of us will not know is that the twelve tribes of Israel had these signs as their ensigns when they marched or camped in the wilderness. E W Bullinger has this illustration in his Companion Bible of how they camped around the tabernacle in Numbers chapter two.
The other thing that we may not know is that each of the twelve signs has three minor constellations known as decans. Decans simply refer to ten degrees as there are thirty-six decans or three times twelve and they represent one thirty-sixth of the three hundred and sixty degree circle or ten degrees.
The story in the heavens has a start and finish and the mystery of the Sphinx tells us where that is. Sphinx refers to the large stone edifice in Egypt that has the head of a woman and the body of a lion. Sphingo is a Greek word, one of its meanings is to join. A sphinx was found on the ceiling of the Portico of the Temple of Esneh, Egypt between Leo and Virgo.
This is a copy of the tracing of a drawing of Signor Bossi, executed on the spot, under the direction of Mr Edward J. Cooper, in 1820.
From this we know to start the story in Virgo or the virgin and end it with Leo the lion. Bullinger in Appendix 12 of his Companion Bible lists the themes of the twelve signs and you can find these in the back of this book. Below is his simple list.
- First Book. The Redeemer.(His first coming).
- A | VIRGO. The prophecy of the promised seed.
- B | LIBRA. The Redeemer’s work (grace).
- B | SCORPIO. The Redeemer’s conflict.
- A | SAGITTARIUS. The prophecy fulfilled.
- Second Book. The Redeemed. (His work and its results).
- C | CAPRICORNUS. The prophecy of deliverance.
- D | AQUARIUS. Results of work bestowed.
- D | PISCES. Results of work enjoyed.
- C | ARIES. The prophesied deliverance fulfilled.
- Third Book. The Redeemer. (His Second Coming.)
- E | TAURUS. The prophecy of coming judgment.
- F | GEMINI. The Redeemer’s reign in glory.
- F | CANCER. The Redeemer’s possession safe.
- E | LEO. The prophecy of triumph fulfilled.
Before going on with the main theme of Aliyah I want to show you from just three of the Zodiac constellations how the redemption story works.
This constellation – Virgo, and one of its three minor decans (constellations) – Coma, depicts the beginning of the story – a virgin will give birth to a boy who will be the Desire of all Nations.
This constellation of Aries has three main stars whose names mean; bruised, bound and slain. As Christians we don’t need to elaborate on the meaning further – Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
This constellation of Leo, with its three decans; Corus the Raven, Crater the Cup and Hydra the Abhorred Serpent is the final picture of the Zodiac. It too tells a story that Christians should be familiar with – The Lion of the Tribe of Judah treads underfoot His enemy the serpent. His cup of wrath is poured out on His enemies and the birds of the air eat the flesh of fallen kings. In the book of revelation at the end of the bible Jesus is depicted as the Lion of Judah (Leo) treading underfoot (Hydra the snake) (Gen 3:15, Rev 12:9) whilst the cup of wrath (Crater) is poured out (Rev 14:9-10, Rev 16:17,19) and the birds of prey (Corvus) feast upon the remains (Rev 19:17-18).
Just these three signs of the Zodiac alone tell the story of man’s redemption. Now I want to show you the love story of the captive daughter of Zion as depicted in the stars.
Classic Hero, heroine villain story Perseus Rescuing Andromeda
Andromeda epitomises the heroine. She is chained, stretched out, afflicted, weak, bound, broken and struck down. Captive in Sheol. Her name Andromeda comes from two Hebrew root words which mean “set free from death”דּרור מות
- Set free as in Leviticus 25:10 & death Psalm 9:13
- Who is keeping our heroine bound? In Paola Veronese (Caliri)’s painting it is Cetus the sea monster from the sign of Aries and rescuing her is Perseus, the breaker, that is the breaker of her bonds, from the same sign.
- It is the classic romance drama.
And So in Aries the heroine is now depicted as Cassiopeia, the freed, the beautiful enthroned, set up as queen and seated in heavenly places with the king Cepheus. Cetus is the now bound and chained enemy, that rebel who has been thrust down. And how did that victory come about. The main sign of Aries answers that. Aries is a lamb who is bruised bound and slain. It is in the sacrifice, this willing sacrifice of the hero’s own life, that the victory of freeing the woman has taken place.
Oh how the heavens declare the glory of God!!!
Ephesians 2:6 And has raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
But I want to show you in details some of the other constellations that will broaden our understanding our God’s redemptive plan concerning Israel and Judah.
In this blog we will look at the second last sign, Cancer. Bullinger has this as the theme of the Redeemer’s possession safe. Kay Garbutt, blessed be her name, a dear friend of mine used to lecture on Cancer as Aliya in the Stars. (Aliya- going up) The theme seems to be the redeemed of the LORD will return. I want to show you that the theme is indeed about the redeemed held safe by the shepherd and the redeemed returning home but more than just those two things that there is a duality regarding the main sign of Cancer and that this duality continues on in the three decans associated with Cancer, implying that two sets of redeemed may be returning and becoming one under The Shepherd King, David.
Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens: And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute. Genesis 49:14-15
Issachar carried this sign on their banner. We know by the names and the theme of those names that the present image of a crab is probably not the original although “The possession held fast” is an attribute of a crab. Most likely the Greeks, who corrupted many of the original pictures, also corrupted this picture. Kenneth C. Fleming God’s Voice in the Stars Zodiac signs and Biblical Truth draws this constellation as a Sheep Fold stating that legend had it that Juno placed the crab amongst the signs as a reward for helping Hydra battle with Hercules. The Egyptian zodiac of Denderah named it Klaria meaning Cattle-fold. In fact the name Cancer may come from two Arabic words Khan meaning Inn or Traveller’s Rest and cer (or ker) meaning Encircling. Certainly the Arabic for this constellation is Alsartan, which means Who holds or binds. The Syriac name, Sartano has a similar meaning and the Hebrew word, Ausar as in Genesis 49:11 means To Bind or Harness. So the picture is of a traveller’s inn with an enclosure in which to keep animals safe.
There is a star cluster in the middle of this constellation called Praesepe, meaning Multitude. There are two stars either side of it known as the two asses. They are individually called Asellus Boreas and Asellus Australis or Northern ass and Southern ass. Another prominent star is called Tegmine meaning Holding. Other starts and their meanings are; Acubene Sheltering or Hiding place, Ma’alaph Assembled Thousands, and Alhimarean the Kids or Lambs.
Fleming states, “The combined witness seems to be that of a sheltering place where people and flocks are safe and held fast on their way home.”
Ursa Minor The lesser sheep fold
The Hebrew word for bear and sheep fold are very similar and it may be that the Greeks mistook the Arabic Dubah דּבּר “fold”Strongs 1699 for Dohv דּב “bear” Strongs 1678
Many of the star names have meanings associated with the redeemed assembled and waiting for the coming. The interesting thing of course is Polaris – a modern name for the Polar Star that was called Alruccaba meaning Turned or Ridden Upon. When this star was named it was NOT the Polar star so maybe it prophesies of a time to come when it would be the Polar Star that the heavens appear to turn upon.
This is the second decan whose modern picture is of a bear. This again cannot be the case as who has ever seen a bear with a long tail. Instead this is the larger flock that has been purchased by the blood of the Shepherd King. The small flock were waiting for the coming, possibly alluding to Judah whilst the larger or latter flock is separated in the nations, purchased and being lead home. All the star names testify to it.
Argo – The Ship
In Kircher’s Egyptian Planisphere Argo is represented by two galleys (as in two sheep folds). One goes from Taurus (Bull) to Virgo, the other goes from Leo (Lion) to Capricorn.
Virgil “one galley freighted with the installed Bull and the other with the solstitial Lion”.
The story of Cancer as told by the names of the constellations and the stars according to Bullinger
- Cancer – The possessions held fast
- Ursa Minor – The lesser sheep fold
- Ursa Major – The fold and the flock
- Argo – The redeemed pilgrims safe at home
This is the story of the home coming and keeping safe the Lord’s redeemed. There is a duality in the whole theme. Cancer – an inn or cattle fold with its Northern Ass and Southern Ass. “Issachar is a strong ass, crouching down between the sheep folds” Genesis 49:14. There are two sheep fold decans. Also Argo was once two ships, according to Kircher. So this is the story of two groups of redeemed being held safe and coming home. “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.” John 10:16.
So we see if we have eyes to see, a witness in the heavens of two sets of redeemed coming home – presumably with different callings – otherwise why two and this matches the witness in the scripture of two Houses of Israel, Judah and Ephraim. In Cancer we have the Northern Ass and the Southern Ass alluding to the Northern and Southern kingdoms of Israel. The two decans of Ursa Minor and Ursa Major being two flocks, the Good Shepherd talking to one and stating that he has other sheep which are not of the this fold but He must bring them in also. Here He was talking with Judah and referring to Ephraim, or the ten tribes of Israel, in the nations. Lastly, Argo is either a large ship with many redeemed stretching from Taurus, (Ephraim’s banner) to Leo (Judah’s banner) or two ships. Virgil also implied the two ships were represented by the Bull of Ephraim and the Lion of Judah.
Before we conclude this chapter let’s look at something Bob Wadsworth of Biblical Astronomy saw in the heavens. Between 1996 and 2003 he saw the reversal of signs that had happened in the heavens in 721BC and 586BC. In 721 BC the Northern Kingdom had gone into captivity and in 586BC the Southern Kingdom went into seventy years of captivity. He makes a connection between the constellation known as Pisces and its associated decan, The Bands and the captivity of both houses.
Pisces (the two fish) and Bands (the cord or bridal joining them)
(The other two decans are Andromeda and Perseus mentioned above.)
In Zechariah chapter 11 the prophet is foreshadowing Israel going into captivity. In verse seven it says… “And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock.” He breaks Beauty and then prophesies the death Messiah and then in verse fourteen he says… “Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.” The two fish of Pisces representing the Northern Kingdom of Israel which goes into captivity to the north and the Southern Kingdom of Judah which goes into captivity to the East. The constellation holding both fish is known as “The Bands”.
On the left above is Pisces and The Bands and the right is this overlaid over the Middle East.
Below are the signs that happened in these constellations in 721BC.
If indeed these were the signs of the two houses going into captivity we may expect there to be signs in the heavens of their return.
After the stave Bands was broken did God prophesy a reconciliation? Well we read exactly that in the second half of Ezekiel chapter thirty-seven. “Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.” Ezekiel 37:16-17
Isaiah also foresees a day when Judah, Ephraim and the nations (goyim) will be gathered. “And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” Isaiah 11:12 and “The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.” vs 13.
